This extrageneric fragment may be a passage destined for incorporation in a letter, notes toward a poem, or an autonomous pensée. Dickinson appears to have revised the text both during the initial drive of composition, when she probably crossed out "which" and wrote "with which" on the following line, and again, immediately after completing a preliminary draft of the text, when she probably canceled the phrase "of Human | nature" and penciled in variants for "readily" ("cordially") and for "subject" ("theme"; "concurrence") above and below the line. The open bracket—"(more noble"—may direct the writer-reader's passage through the text.
